Innocence
saskia de rooy
Some time ago the idea of a black wooden baby rose into my mind. Allthough it seemed a very good image I rejected it as being too confronting. I did not make it. Then I was allowed into the Boterhal, an artist community in Hoorn, as a member and at my first membership exhibition there I was allowed to use only paper and charcoal. So I did make her. During the opening of the exhibition some people came to ask me what I wanted to say with this sculpture…
Not making her initially was ofcourse self censorship. Things happening in Gaza, in the world, the way we humans treat Earth, Nature, it is all about killing innocence. We can all look away, even continue to do so but this will not change anything in the world. We can ask ourselves what it is that we might do to make a difference. And then do this. We all have some power. Together we can make paradise.
